Home - HerMoneyTalks
This story is a part of Femvest 2.0, and is a women’s financial empowerment initiative in collaboration with BSE India. In this story series, we recognize women achievers in finance who have carved a niche for themselves.
Meet Prema Mitra , a strong-willed woman who has carved for herself a successful career in finance, and is an inspiration to thousands of women. Hailing from Kolkata, she has 8 years of experience in the NBFC industry and 22 years in the Mutual Fund industry, and is now a Mutual Fund Distributor.
An interesting step into the world of investments Prema did not choose finance; rather, finance chose her. The story goes that her neighbor approached her shortly after graduation exams and informed her that NBFC was searching for administrative staff.
They inspired me to be a perfect mother, perfect wife, soft spoken, and to maintain a balance between work and family life.
She went for an interview, completed an aptitude test, and was assigned to the financial department, where she fell in love with the field.
Prema’s colleagues encouraged her to go for mutual funds and long-term investments along her journey. “They inspired me to be a perfect mother, perfect wife, soft spoken, and to maintain a balance between work and family life,” reveals Prema.
Successes achieved in the face of challenges Though Mumbai is the center of the Indian financial world, Prema couldn’t move to Mumbai since her family was in Kolkata. But she didn’t let this limit her. Instead, she tackled it head on and began reinventing her profession. She switched jobs from NBFC – Mutual Fund Operations to Mutual Funds Sales and Mutual Fund Distribution.
Working with BSE India, she used their online platform from the beginning. BSE encouraged her to complete a SIP log in a day on Akshay Trithiya within a week of starting on the program. It was a smashing success, owing to BSE’s support.
Investing has risk. But the biggest risk is not investing.
That provided her the assurance she needed to pursue individual investors. She went on to introduce over 100 people to mutual funds for the first time.
Even Covid was unable to stop her since she had already embraced technology and was accustomed to using an online platform. On a daily basis, she had 8-9 meetings. She instilled in her customers the importance of goal-setting and encouraged them to be patient.
Advice and support for women Prema’s constant refrain is: “Investing has risk. But the biggest risk is not investing.” She feels it’s remarkable how often you can give someone advice and it ends wonderfully. The sense of achievement is as good as being a teacher. She has a larger proportion of female clients and enjoys teaching them how to become wealthy and happy.
She also feels that by financially educating one woman, the whole family is financially literate. She advises women to get into financial mode, review their financial statements, commence filing family IT returns, and participate in family financial decision-making.

Prema has built a significant Asset Under Management (AUM) with the majority of High Net Worth Individuals. Yet, she has always had a desire to reach out to the layperson and help them understand Mutual Funds as a way to build wealth.
She grins, “I feel even better when I sees my maid, yoga teacher, relatives, and friends come to me for investment advice and to make their dreams come true.” She is also a member of an NGO that teaches slum dwellers about government policy.
