This story is a part of Femvest 2.0, and is a women’s financial empowerment initiative in collaboration with BSE India. In this story series, we recognize women achievers in finance who have carved a niche for themselves.
In India, a lot of women are required to leave their jobs after getting married. It is considered their duty to take care of their households. Career takes a back step then. One such example is Mrs. Preeti Mittal , Born in 1981, Preeti is a self-reliant, independent, and confident woman by nature. She joined her family business in 2000 for experience and knowledge. Following that, she acquired a master’s degree in finance along with BSE training and certification. After her marriage, in July 2019, she restarted her journey to help investors achieve a financially secure life.
Let’s see a glimpse of Preeti’s life as a woman in finance.
What challenged her, what motivated her Being born into a family where she was never discriminated against as a girl. Rather, both her brother and she were treated equally. Her father was a stockbroker. So, they grew up listening to the stock prices and distributions. Quips Preeti, “Finance was in my blood. That’s why I feel that I didn’t choose my finance career, but my finance career chose me!”
Preeti joined her father’s firm when she was young because her father got sick. So, both her brother and she started their initial journey as sub-brokers. The organization was their father’s, and they were taking it ahead with a flag in their hand, so to speak.

Cut to when she got married. The refrain at home used to be: “Hamare ghar mai aurte kaam nahi karti.” That is, the women in our household don’t work. Preeti got pretty discouraged by this. But she had to confront these challenges head-on because she wanted to work and take care of her father’s business.
Finally, after a good length of time in a homemaker’s role, Preeti took the plunge back into her career. With a little support from her son and her husband she joined her father’s firm back in 2019. She got a lot of confidence from her elder kid, who supported her with motivational words like: “Mom, you are capable and can definitely proceed in this line. You should not regret these 10 years down the line that you could have restarted, but you didn’t.”
Recalls Preeti, “So I restarted. And I am so happy that I listened to him.”
Achievements dotting Preeti’s Finance career One of the milestones in her career was that BSE on their 10th year celebration invited all women for a small celebration. She attended that event. She was new then to that kind of atmosphere, but all of them were like a family. “We had some words of encouragement and understood the good-will associated with the Distribution of MFs,” reveals ebullient Preeti.
Another achievement was on Diwali this year. “We achieved 120 SIPs in the first cycle. But then I checked on Twitter and realized that people are doing 1000 SIPs a day.” But, like the feel of one’s first car one’s first salary, the memory will always be special to her.

Preeti gets a lot of inspiration from her mother, but her role model is her father, with all the ups and downs he has seen in the stock market. From the Harshad Mehta scam to the NYSE’s loss and profit, to the comeback with a bull market, he had seen it all. “With a positive attitude, he always keeps on going. So, I too keep on going forward,” reminisces Preeti fondly.
Tips and hacks for Finance newbies Preeti’s advice to aspiring women: “If you are looking for a career in Finance, then darling it is not going to be an easy journey. You have to be strong.
However, the journey that you are on will give you so much confidence that nothing else would. Just make sure that, in Finance, you are guiding someone about their money, so it is very important that you have to do the research carefully.”

Her money management tips for women: “So, if you are free and no one is dependent on you, then you can use the 50-50 rule wherein you invest 50% and enjoy the remaining 50%. But if someone is dependent on you, then I would say 50-25-25 is good to go.”
